Dow Jones US Indices

Overview

Dow Jones US Indices focus on stocks traded on the US exchanges. These indices are divided into several different groups with a top-down approach. The size-segment indices occupy the top spot. These can be broken down into style indices based on growth and value. The third index grouping breaks the stock market down into ten industries. These industries are then broken down into three different subsets (super sector, sector and subsector).

Size-Segment Indices: Any index focusing on the broad market, small-cap stocks, mid-cap stocks or large-cap stocks (DJ US Large-Cap Index, DJ US Small-Cap Index, etc…).

Style Indices: Any index focusing on growth or value (DJ US Mid-Cap Value Index, DJ US Small-Cap Growth Index, etc…)

Industry Indices: An index that covers one of the ten stock market industries as defined by Dow Jones (basic materials, consumer goods, consumer services, financials, health care, industrials, oil & gas, technology, telecommunications and utilities).

Sector Indices: An index that covers a supersector, sector or subsector. Using a top-down approach, Dow Jones puts industry group at the top, followed by supersector, sector and subsector (retail > general retailers > apparel retailers).

DJ US Indices

Note: There may be some confusion because the S&P Sector SPDRs also represent nine big sectors in the stock market. Dow Jones Indices refers to these “sectors” as industries. In addition, StockCharts.com breaks down the S&P sectors into industry groups, which Dow Jones Indices refers to as supersectors, sectors and subsectors.
